Chill Please - I'm Hung over

First off, Thanks to everyone who came to noiseban.02.12 on Friday, at the Russian Bar. Great night.

Just thought i'd put together some superchilled out music to deal with the old sunday hang over:

first up, Hammock - Can almost see you.

Really nice band, check out all their stuff over at band camp where you can also buy their albums and jazz...

Next up, some good old fashioned Texan post-rock by The Clam Blue Sea with We happy few- check out their website for tour dates (mostly in the US).

Lastly is Paper Birds by the Icelandic band Parachutes who unfortunately split up in 2009. If you've noticed the likeness to sigur ross, its because they shared some band members. Following the break up, all of their albums have been released for free as explained in the Swedish bed music blog.

Get there before 11pm for free entry and a chance to see TheGreenLazer kick things off with a few choice Hip-Hop tracks. Later on, I (Ceefax B) will be playing some Disco & House and maybe a little Electro, followed by John Bailey (Egg the Teens) playing the same sort of stuff. Things will get a bit more hectic when Monsieur Ferro and Full Stop chuck some big Electo sounds in the mix. Good friends of Noiseban, the very busy Fanny Games will hit the decks for a DJ set at around 2am. Before we close up for the night expect to see the usual noiseban free-for-all with everyone playing head-to-head.Friday 2nd December

Chill & Trip Hop

First up, Got wind of this relatively unknown artist King Singh from Steve Strong over at White Elephant Clothing. This track, 'wood or wire?' has a sweet video and is probably his best work so far. check it out:

Download the track here,

Next up, Whilst reading the musigh blog I came across an artist we used to play far too much on the Ralph and Joe show back on XpressionFM, I am of course talking about emancipator:

That track was Nevergreen - Which you can download here

Lastly, one of the pioneers of the Genre, DJ Krush: with Day's end. Enjoy!

By the way, the next noiseban is on Friday the 2nd of December, click attending on facebook for guest list.

French!

Justice have a new album out, and the title track is pretty self descriptive; "Audio, Video, Disco".
It seems like a million years since they released the single "Civilization" and this time they've ditched the rock guitar and drums for some smooth synth sounds. The first thing I though when I heard the track AVD was these guys are unmistakably French. It isn't just their accents, this track seems to pull together bits of Air, Daftpunk's more relaxed songs and a touch of Yuksek. I can't tell you what it is about this song, but it's definitely French.
Yuksek's album "Living on the Edge of Time" was out this summer, I recommend getting a copy. This is his latest single, "Always On The Run":

Also Check out Villa's balearic remix:
Yuksek - Always on the Run (VillA remix) by VILLA (Official)
Seeing as I mentioned Air I have to play this:

London riots

I'm not a teenager, I never had an Atari (I had a Commodore 64) and I avoided the London riots like a scared little mouse - but I do like Atari Teenage Riot:

They remind me of my angst filled years when I listened to punk music, but with none of the cheesy nostalgia of playing an Offspring album. This recent remix by Tony Senghore sounds a little bit like what the clubs were playing 2 years ago, but I still like it:

Oh and while your here, look at this:

Special Sauce

I've just been listening to Crystal Fields by The Special Ks, it's pleasant enough - a bit like one of the Mystery Jets housier tracks as sung by Daniel Bedingfield (not that it's necessarily a bad thing!)

The whole time I was listing to the track I was expecting it to get heavier, a skillful remix could really give this song some depth. something like this Toddla T remix of Wave And Wine by Schlachthofbronx:

Saying that, the original mix is hardly subtle:

8-Oh's in the200-Oh's

Cheesy? Possibly - but still, 80s Synth recreated with the wanders of modern techno-knowled-G-unit can give you a feel good warm feeling like no other. What do I speak of? This:

Now tell me that wasn't good? If you just told me that wasn't good I disagree. It was good. Actually it was Exercise 4, a semi-bonus track on Bent's album Ariels which you really should buy here. Bent blow my mind like a dyson air multiplier blows out a candle: effeciently, with minimum noise and maximum techno-joy.

Next - Some flashbulb (aka Benn Jordan), I posted one of his acoustic tracks recently, well such is his talent he also owns at electronica, like with this track Nightmares from his album sleep

By the way, you can listen to a LOT of flashbulb tracks, and buy the albums directly from him for a not unreasonable amount of money at his bandcamp page

Anyway's, in an album I feel is too often under rated and blasted for being "pop", a great track that reuses a 80s synth to the maximum is Mylo's In my arms from destroy rock and roll. If you want to here almost perfect sampling and production this is defiantly one of the top albums of all time. buy the album anywhere

By the way - we're putting on a noiseban at the victory in Hoxton on the first Friday of December.

Hit attending on Facebook for guest list entry.

Electro oh oh oh

Been a while since we've had some Electro posted- so I thought I'd blaow some great tunes out on the circuit right about now:

First up some glitchy electro filth with I like my voice by Sirusmo which you can buy here

Next up in the progressive end of the spectrum I really like Life Pulse by DJ Style

Whenever I hear Apparat I want to move to Berlin. Also worth mentioning, the German lable BPitch Control - who he is signed to also have LOADs of really interesting music. Try AAREA NEGROT. Anyway, this next track is Cheap Thrills by Apparat which you can buy here

Actually, while we're on the topic of awesome german musicians called Apparat - I love this collaborative effort he did with Ellen Allien: This is quite a good video by Marco Testoni

Ellen Allien has produced some fantastico mix tapes over at percussionlab (which I don't mind saying is where I find a LOT of fresh artists these days)

The Kraken wakes

So it's been a while since the last Noise Ban night. After munching on a bunch of crap from some venues earlier in the year the Noise Ban guys have been off doing various un-Noise Ban things like trying to get a book published, DJing at other peoples nights, attempting to produce music and playing Nintendo Wii.

The time has come for the guys to reunite and put on another night for the good of all man kind. We haven't confirmed the date so I can't say much at the moment, but there will be another smooth, sweaty, sensual and shocking night of noises being banned very soon.

Expect to hear all types of electronic and um, non-electronic music at the next NB, we'll be playing disco, reggae, house, electro, hip-hop, trip-hop, house-hip and flip-flop.

I've been listening to a lot of disco lately, so when you see me behind the decks expect to hear stuff like this:
Space Ranger - Plastic Romance (Motor City Drum Ensemble Vocal Mix) by The Ransom Note

see you soon,
Ceefax B.

African Queen

This track just won't get out of my head, I've been humming it all weekend. It maybe a cheesey bit of 80's nonsense but I love it:

This goes out to Noiseban's mate CK: Have fun in Nigeria, keep safe mate!

Forest Man

DJ Propolis has given us a sneaky look at his mix "Swollen Banks". Its a tour of global summer sounds, taking in hip-hop, dubstep, soul and all kinds of electronic wobbles and beats. Propolis weaved it together sitting on the floor of a Canadian forest with his own smooth trip-hop style, Noiseban present it here as a UK exclusive:

Work Supportif

C'est musique pour vous, si vous, comme moi, travaillent actuellement....

Interestingly, yet to be spoilt by mass market success, independently sucsessful, this is the lead song from the 3rd album by the Irish band, The Redneck Manifesto:

I'm sure I've raved about the flashbulb before, but this is a quality track from a quality artist with loads to offer. This is Kirlian Voyager by The Flashbulb:

The Canadian Don Ross with RockBarra, mind blowingly good guitar. I personally like at 2 minutes(ish) when he plays some amazing rolling pitch harmonics:

And lastly, 'Closing' played by The Philip Glass Ensemble and written by Philip Glass, arguably one the best composers of all time:

Qualität

I've just been to Berlin and I visited a club called Berghain. They are pretty strict on who they let in, so a square like you won't get past the door men - but if you do some how fool them, you'll be treated to some sexy hardcore techno. It's what I imagine Fabric was like before it got over-run with tourists and idiots (like me). Actually I take that back - Fabric is still great.

A mate of mine is a techno DJ and for quite a while I have mocked his genre, saying there isn't enough going on and techno is boring. Well this is me officially eating my words - in the right environment techno is sehr gut!

Here are a couple of the DJs I saw in Berlin;

Where's this bad boy been hiding?

This bassnectar remix of the Pixies classic is over 2 years old and its still got all the brown notes.

If you want to see bassnectar in the UK, you cant (unless you can somehow get into the already sold out secret garden party) but what you can do is listen to more bassnectar tracks and remixes.

Now then, last night, Monoferrousity had a great time watching These Single Spies down at Carnivale (end of Brick Lane). Tight & professional sound, creative, interesting and well worth a listen. If you want more words check out The Wireless interview.

Tropical Pop

Listening to Hollie Cook, makes me imagine sitting on a beach under blue skys looking out over the Carribean sea, with a cool glass of rum punch.

Walking In The Sand by Hollie Cook

Hollie's new album is coming out next month, produced by UK dub legend Prince Fatty and I for one, will be buying it. As the daughter of Sex Pistol drummer, Paul Cook you might expect a bit more of a harsh sound, but Hollie's voice is as smooth as ice cream.

Shadow Kissing by Hollie Cook

Milk & Honey (Moody Boyz Vocal Remix) by Hollie Cook

I was going to put a link to a recipe for rum punch but can't find the right one, so I'll just tell you mine: "one of sweet, two of sour, three of weak, four of power"
1 unit of brown sugar
2 units of lime
3 units of crushed ice
4 units of quality dark rum (Preferably from Barbados)

A few of those and you'll be dancing all night

Aeroplane

I got this album a little while back and it's my favorite at the moment. Every track on it (except Good riddance) is a brilliant slice of smooth disco. I wanted to play a few tracks from the album, but they are really difficult to find online. The title track is a blend of psycadellic space disco witha real late 70's feel mixed with a reaggae sound and an modern feel:

We Can't Fly by user6832065

Other excellent tracks on this album include the dreamy "Fish in the sky" and the electro edged "Without lies". You should definately get a copy of this album.

Lord Francis Lobotomy's Audio Review-o-grams

Dear Sirs,

What a treat, it's me again, Lord Francis Lobotomy with my synaptastical analysis of another release for your pleasure.

Please find following my review of "Honey Mine" by the band "Korallreven".

Well the track "Honey Mine", to me, sounds like listening to the eighties with your head submerged in a bath. Whilst it feels nice initially, very quickly you'll tire of the fluffy echoes. Be careful, too much fluffy echo and you'll want to take your head out of the bath and put it into an oven.

Infact I would say "korallreven" really is quite awful, The only redeemable aspect of "korallreven" is the boldness of naming all their tracks after sexual practices. But even with that I'd rather be Ted Hughes than listen to any more of this drivel.

Just to remove any danger of those
grim, hideous, awful, disgusting, abominable, appalling, beastly, disgusting, dreadful, frightful, ghastly, grisly, gross, gruesome, hateful, horrendous, horrid, loathsome, macabre, monstrous, morbid, nasty, odious, offensive, ugly, awful, detestable, repellent, repugnant, repulsive, revolting, shocking, sick, and uncomely sounds from staying in your consciousness for a second longer listen to this immediately...

Lord Francis Lobotomy's Audio Review-o-grams

Dear Sirs,

Welcome! It is I, Lord Francis Lobotomy with my synaptastical analysis of the latest releases for your pleasure.
Please find following my review of "In A While" by those young whippy cads "Beaches" on their album "Eternal Sphere".

Taking the expression "tonight we're going to party like its 1999" quite literally it feels like this jibs's already been flown by stereolab. "In a while" is a reasonable track but already a bit dated & I can't help thinking it sounds a bit like being stuck in a lift with a 16 year old wearing Doc Martins.

That said, the guitar is impressively punchy for what is essentially drone, & it isn't horrible. Yawn, the problem is when you're as old as I am you'd rather listen to some good old pioneering 90s post-rock rather than some new aged fangled post-rock.

I promise to write soon,

Your ever loving servant,

Lord Francis Lobotomy

Selling outs the new selling in...

Sigur Ross, the xx, phoenix; all good bands with unbelievably great albums. You know- the kind of album you can put on and just slip into a dream staring at the wall in front of you for the whole duration not even aware.

All good bands, with great albums that have been ruined by being mercilessly over played. Last week I was arguing that it is an inevitability that good songs on good albums will rise to the top before falling off the top and into the laps of bar managers, advertisers and every radio DJ ever.

Well, I'm not actually sure it is totally inevitable. I think that first they probably had to have signed to a major record label and/or sold the rights to that amazing song on that amazing album which you hold so dear.

Enter centre stage: Mojave 3 with their 2003 Album Spoon and Rafter:

(Blue Bird of Happiness EP Version)

As far as I'm aware, NOT selloutpussyassbitches.

(Hard to miss you)

So as they didn't sell out and instead kept it independent with 4AD lets all buy their albums until it gets big enough for them to to be used in Nike commercials.

(Between the bars)

Not that I'm blaming bands for making (loads of) money, I'd sell out faster than corned beef in a well mannered yet horrific post apocalyptic dooms day scenario.
Also, I'm not saying phoenix ever professed to be anything other than lovely lovely French pop.

Basically what I'm saying is Mojave 3 are hugely under rated, proper good and you should buy all their albums ever. (amazon) (groves-inc)

I used to get REALLY upset by remixes of certain songs.

One Said song would be Reckoner by Radiohead, as follows;

I hope you would agree one of the best songs ever written. Al Gore agrees with me, that's why it was used as the theme of Current TV during its formative years from 2004.

Anyway, I realised that I was treating this song as though it was permanent, quantifiable and unique.

By nature songs are impermanent, transient and subject to the perception of the beholder.

And so let the remixes (and covers) commence:
